How do my lists get made? How do I pick the books that end up on my lists?
I start with inspiration for the day - a birthday, a historical event, a celebration, a festival, a death, a holiday, or just the general season.
Then I use my library's catalog to find books that fit that category or theme. I limit the books to books published within the last 10 years, unless I am working a specific time (best books of the 90s!, best vampire books from last year, etc)
After making the list of all the books that fit my category, I then head over to Goodreads and note the rating and the number of reviews. I sort the list and remove items that have very few or no reviews. Then I resort by the rating and keep the top ten best. I know this is not scientific or all encompassing and there are problems with Goodreads...but it's how I work.
I generally do not keep more than one book from the same author on one list (unless I am specifically doing one author - best of Stephen King, for example). And I try to use the first book in a series (Even if it breaks the pubbed in the last 10 years rule)
And that's generally how I do it for now! I started this blog in January 2019 as a way to hone my list making and discovery skills and to explore a variety of topics. I hope you enjoy what I do!
